For anyone who has bought a new home, they know that it is equal parts exhilarating and terrifying. Finding the perfect community, elevation, and house model are decisions that require many hours of conversation to ensure that you are purchasing a house that you will be proud to call home for years to come.
And the process doesn’t end there. Once you decide on what the envelope of the home is going to look like, there comes all the decisions for the inside of the home. What paint colour should I choose? What exactly is LVP? Is gold lighting too trendy? These types of questions can easily keep anyone up at night wondering if they are making the right decisions to create a beautiful home.

So how exactly do you gather inspiration for a home? The simple answer? Research, research, research.
I can’t stress this enough, especially for first time home buyers. As an Interior Designer, I meet with a wide range of customers and I can confidently say that those homeowners who take the time to research what finishes they want in their new home find the selection process much more seamless and less stressful.
So, what does research mean? Well, it’s a lot more fun than any school paper you did research for. And will lead to time saved later in the process.

At Shane Homes we truly want customers to customize their home to their heart’s content. This means that there is no one set package for you to pick from. It means more options for you to create a home that is uniquely you. But first, you need to know what a home that is ‘uniquely you’ is going to look like.

Do you like a Modern Farmhouse look? Perhaps something more traditional? Luckily, we have many sources that can help you out. The best of these sources are our showhomes. We build showhomes for customers walk through and find what speaks to you. A showhome is the best place to see what finishes will look like full scale. When choosing selections in the Design Studio you will be seeing small sample sizes of things like tile and flooring so knowing what something looks like full scale can bring a better understanding to your aesthetic preferences.

So, go and see a variety of show homes in different areas of the city. We purposely use different materials in each showhome so that we can showcase a variety of design styles and products. Take pictures of the things that make you light up and start to catalogue what you would love to see in your own home.
If you are more comfortable viewing from home these days, you can also take virtual tours of every one of our show homes on our website. Click here to take you to our current showhome offerings:

Second, understand what items are included in your home and what items you may want to upgrade. Budget is very important to most home buyers so having an idea of what areas you want to spend and save will help with the selection process. Currently, we have a virtual tour of our Design Studio where we go over what standard and upgraded options we offer as well as outlining the entire selection process at our different vendors. This is a great way to kick off your selection process because it will outline the expectations of our process while providing important info so you can make educated budget decisions. Lastly, you can utilize the boundless world of the internet, where design is accessible at your fingertips. You can search ‘mid century modern kitchen’ on google or Pinterest and thousands of results will appear. Pinterest is a personal favourite of mine because you can create a digital pin board of all the ideas that you love. This can act as a way to categorize what you would like for different areas of the home. You can then show the images to your Interior Designer and they can help you put the look together. Now, there is a disclaimer when it comes to this. Pinterest is a great place for inspiration, but keep in mind that we may not be able to use the exact materials in a photo. Instead is use what is available to create a look that is similar and exudes the same style. If you want to check out all our show home photos on our Pinterest page, check out the link below:

At the end of the day, you do not need to have everything decided for your home before the selection process begins. But having those key conversations with those living with you and asking yourself what you want your house to look and feel like is a crucial part of the selection process. And it’s okay to be unsure! We are here to help you in this process and provide our expert opinion. All you need to do is start asking yourself those questions and you are already on your way.
Have some fun with this – ‘researching’ for your new home doesn’t have to be dry. Sit down with your family, spouse, kids, maybe even the dog, and get a pulse on what everyone wants. Engage with each other and get excited that you get to choose every piece that goes into your new home and customize to your taste. Talk it over coffee, or maybe even a glass of wine (or two), and see what ideas start flowing. We can’t wait to create a space that is your own.
