Calgary, AB (June 7, 2016) - With the news that Fort McMurray residents are now able to start returning home, and getting their lives back to normal, Shane Homes is releasing the first $50,000 from their Fort McMurray Disaster Fund to the Wood Buffalo Community Food Bank.

“The tremendous response of money and time from across Canada and other places has been heart warming and made a world of difference in meeting the immediate needs of the Fort McMurray and area families. While disasters capture headlines and national attention short term, the work of recovery and rebuilding is of course long term. This is even more particularly true in the case of Fort McMurray which was already coping with very difficult times from fallout due to the many job layoffs and expired EI benefits” said Shane Wenzel, President of Shane Homes.

“While amazing work has been done by the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the many other agencies and groups in meeting the immediate needs of the Fort McMurray residents, we looked at the various ways our donations could be of the most assistance as quickly as possible but also have a long term benefit to their recovery. While all individual personal donations were matched by both the Provincial and Federal Governments, corporation donations were not. So, with that in mind, and knowing that every $1 donated to a Food Bank generates $5 worth of food we made the decision to direct our donation to the Wood Buffalo Community Food Bank.” Shane Homes encourages others who may be looking for ways to assist this community and/or others across Alberta to consider a Food Bank all of which have experienced increased demand from Alberta’s economic downturn.
