Natasha’s Passion beyond Design … Travel
By Natasha

The love for travel has always been a part of my life. Growing up I was lucky enough to enjoy the lifestyle of traveling with my family. After high school and into college whenever I had the chance I was able to do small trips here and there, mostly the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. At that time in my life it was great, I felt fortunate to be able to get out and experience these wonderful places. However, I knew there was more out there for me to see and I was starting to become anxious to see more, I was young and had nothing holding me back.

I had been an employee with Shane Homes at the time in the Interior Design Department for about 2 years. I knew with 100% certainty that this was the career path for me and that my passion for creativity and working in design was not a whim, but forever. I had a gut feeling if I didn’t travel now I would never get this opportunity to do it again because I would eventually get distracted with work and other responsibilities. I remember the day like it was yesterday when I made the drastic decision to quit my job. My friends and family knew this was something I not only wanted but needed and they fully supported my decision.
Thursday, September 1, 2011 was the day it all began. This was the beginning of an exciting adventure, to explore the world, meet new people, experience other cultures and grow as a human being. My life was about to change from a Monday to Friday 8-5 job to a full time backpacker on the road not knowing what tomorrow was going to bring.
My around the world destinations:
1. United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales)

5. Indonesia (Gili Islands and Bali)

6. South America (Peru and Argentina)

7. Central America (Costa Rica and Nicaragua)

I was able to experience so many things while traveling to all of these beautiful countries.  Some of the highlights for me included:
– skydiving over the Great Barrier Reef
– hiking for 5 days to Machu Picchu
– snorkeling in the beautiful waters of Australia with jellyfish and stingrays
– climbing Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand
– watching the sunrise from Borobudor Buddist Temple in Indonesia
– kissing the blarney stone in Ireland,
– feasting on foreign foods and street meats
– relaxing in my hammock in Thailand’s Khao Sok National Park

The list is endless of all the different things I enjoyed. I cherish these experiences and enjoy the memories. I am often asked what was my favorite part or favorite destination and it’s something that to this day I never have an answer to. Every country, every city or small town that I visited each had something unique about it. The people I met along the way, locals and other backpackers, are what made my around the world adventure that much more amazing.

I traveled for a total of 10 months with over 30+ flights and 1000 bus and train rides.

I made the decision to come home in July of 2012. The long flight back home was one of those moments where you look back at the past 10 months and realize what an amazing and life altering experience you just had. I simultaneously experienced tears of happiness, that I was coming home and had such a great experience, but also tears of sadness that it was all coming to an end.

Traveling and exploring and having no structure was becoming a way of life that made sense but at the same time it felt good to be home and back to a life full of new beginnings. Travel will forever be a part of my life, and I have learnt to never hold back from something you want to do because this is your chance to do it.
