CTV Athlete of the Week Video – Lynn Fast

Lynn is going to be riding her bike across Canada this September in the eighth annual Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. This is her way of supporting kids with cancer and is her way of honouring the memory of her daughter Briony. Briony passed away from brain cancer in 2009 at the age of 17. Between now and then she needs to raise $25,000.00, she is well under way but still needs your help.

Briony and Lynn Fast

Here is a note that we would like to share from Lynn:

I am honoured to share with you that I have been chosen as a National Rider! I will be cycling from Vancouver to Halifax in September 2015 in the eighth annual Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. It’s an epic adventure where we will climb mountains, cross prairies and discover that northern Ontario and New Brunswick have massive climbs too. Cycling endless miles regardless of the weather, we’ll start and finish with a wheel dip in two oceans. It is called the world’s longest charitable cycling event on behalf of childhood cancer.

When my daughter, Briony (age 16) was diagnosed in 2007 with Brain Cancer, my world changed from one of raising my children to adulthood, to one of trying to beat this horrible disease and have her survive with a healthy body and mind. Unfortunately, she was not able to overcome the odds and passed away in February 2009 at 17 years old. This story is one that I hear too often. I ride to provide support to families who are just like mine, fighting to bring their children to a life beyond cancer, I ride to support those families who have lost their children and don’t know if they can move forward, I ride to raise awareness and funding for the ongoing programs and research that will provide support and medical advances to children so that they have a better chance for survival.

At any given time, cancer holds 10,000 Canadian children in its grip. It robs them, and their families, of the laughter and joy that should be part of every childhood. Riding in the eighth annual Sears National Kids Cancer Ride will channel my physical, mental and emotional energy into something much greater – helping brave children return to life as regular kids again.

The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride is organized by the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation. They are entering their TENTH year of executing first class, meaningful events on a national, regional, and local scale. They are the leaders in funding for childhood cancer charities from Coast to Coast with a 100% receipted donation model.

Our cyclists and crew start on September 10, 2015 in Vancouver and will finish on September 26, 2015 in Halifax, covering over 7,000 km in 17 days. Traveling through hundreds of cities and towns across the country, we’ll stop at several pediatric oncology centres and Sears stores. They open their arms each year to embrace and host community events and rides in support of kids and families fighting this debilitating disease. With every pedal stroke, the riders will be raising awareness and money to fight childhood cancer. We’ll also be blogging and sharing our journey daily with all of Canada!

If you can contribute to my pledge it would be greatly appreciated. I know you get inundated with monetary requests and if you cannot make a donation please send a prayer for me and the children I ride for, while I am on my journey, it is just as valuable and costs nothing. Attached below is the link to my fundraising page.

It is especially meaningful that 100% of your donation, 100%, will go to support childhood cancer research in Canada and other hospital programs supported by the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. The support of sponsors like Sears, SLH and dozens of others make this possible along with the registration fees and costs that the cyclists themselves cover.
