News » A playhouse, valued at $8,000, designed and built by students will be auctioned on Vibe 98-5

Shane Homes and Excel Homes, in partnership with Ernest Manning High School and Sir William Van Horne High School are excited to announce that a playhouse, valued at $8,000, designed and built by students will be auctioned on Vibe 98-5 with all proceeds raised going to VIBE 98-5 Kids Funds.

Shane Homes and Ernest Manning High School have a twelve year strong partnership with a mandate to expose students to the construction industry through both classroom and hands-on experience. This partnership grew in 2008 with the addition of two new partners, Sir William Van Horne High School and Excel Homes.

This will bring a total of four playhouses donated to the Kids Fund with over $11,000 raised.

The playhouse being auctioned is “The Chalet Shangri-la” designed by a grade 11 student at Ernest Manning from the Design Class and built by the fall 2009 and spring 2010 grade 10 Construction Services class at Van Horne.

The Building Construction/Drafting teacher at Ernest Manning, Les Kiffiak, who has been instrumental in the Shane Homes partnership since its inception says “This is the fourth year that we’ve been designing playhouses as part of our Partners in Learning Program. I provide the specs to my students, then we bring in a group of experts from Shane Homes and Excel Homes for judging, in conjunction with the Construction Services teacher at Van Horne, Vaughn Erhardt, and our vice-principal. The students’ playhouse designs, which includes building a model of the playhouse, are judged based on the design and the presentation, with the first place design selected to be built.”

The students in Construction Services at Van Horne build the playhouse under the guidance of Erhardt. Manning students do several site visits to view the playhouse while under construction to gain some hands on experience on how plans sometimes need to be tweaked in order to be built.

The two-storey Chalet Shangri-La is very spacious at 14’ length x 8’ wide x 10’6” height. Exterior detailing includes a second floor slide and window box. Inside there is plenty of room for playing with a volume ceiling and built-in ladder leading to a second floor loft. A skylight and multitude of windows allow in plenty of natural light. The playhouse is wired with 3 plugs and 2 lights and just needs to be plugged into a power source for electrical. The Chalet is sure to become a favorite place for kids to play with their friends, while mom and dad will appreciate this extra play space. Once the kids grow up, the playhouse can be converted to a garden shed with a full height door providing easy access for adults.

Shane Wenzel, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Shane Homes adds “We’re very proud of our long standing partnership with Ernest Manning. Our goal of exposing kids to drafting, design and the construction industry is certainly happening with the playhouses, and now on a far more reaching scale than we had initially planned with our involvement with Van Horne. Being able to raise money by auctioning the playhouses and donating it to the Kids Fund is a nice side benefit that we are proud to be part of.”

The playhouses will be auctioned off over a one week period on VIBE 98-5 on air and on their website, starting Wednesday, June 9. Guests will be able to bid on the playhouse starting June 9 with the highest bid winning the playhouse at 10 am on Wednesday, June 16. The money raised from the auction will go to VIBE 98-5’s Kids Funds, a year round initiative of the radio station, with a goal to assist less fortunate families and their children in and around the Calgary area.
