Spring cleaning tips and tricks

Homeowner Tips + Tricks April 2, 2018
It’s that time of year again: Spring cleaning!
Before you get started, we want to remind you that you don’t have to do it all in a day! After a long winter, spring cleaning is a daunting task. Give yourself a couple days to do the job so that it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Our next tip: Make a list.
There’s probably a few spots in your home that have been overlooked all winter. For example, did you know that your dishwasher should be cleaned? Your oven too! And what about the baseboards behind the couch? When was the last time you vacuumed under the bed?

Write a list of all the places that are typically out of sight and out of mind, so no dust bunny is forgotten.

Here’s our list to get you started.

Dishwasher
Yes—the dishwasher needs to be cleaned. It’s just like cleaning the sink after you do the dishes! Don’t just use a regular dish pod, though. Purchase a proper cleanser and run a clean cycle.

Counters, cupboards, and the pantry
When was the last time you wiped down your shelves? It was probably last spring! Remove anything in your cupboards, pantry, and clear the counters to reach all the little nooks and crannies. Don’t forget the cupboards around your stove—that’s where grease might be trapped in the corners!

Fridge
You would think your fridge is supposed to be clean because that’s where you store fresh food, right? Wrong. Take a close look at the shelves inside and you will probably see quite a few spills that slipped through the cracks while your family was busy.

Bed
Not just the sheets, but any pillows and comforters that are machine wash safe as well! If some delicates need dry cleaning, make a special trip. Don’t forget to vacuum under your bed and spot clean your mattress. We spend so much time sleeping that a freshly cleaned bed is worth the hassle!

Closet
Make room for spring to arrive by freshening up your closet. Put away your winter clothes and donate everything you no longer wear. You would be amazed by what can accumulate in a year!

Tile and grout
The little cracks are where the grime hides! Spend some time freshening your tile and grout, especially the corners that are often overlooked. Your bathroom will be sparkling again in no time.

Shower curtains
When was the last time you threw your shower curtain in the wash? It’s about time! The bottom edge can collect a lot of dirt. If you have a plastic liner, wipe it down and lay it outside to dry.

Windows
Inside and out! Clean all the winter grime and dust so spring sunshine can warm your home. Choose a cloudy day for this task so the sun doesn’t dry the cleaner on your windows while you work.

Railings, doors, and light switches
This one is easy. Essentially anywhere that sees fingerprints on a regular basis deserves a wipe down!

Carpets and area rugs
Home service carpet cleaners are also able to clean your area rugs when they visit. Certain fabrics might need to be taken away to be cleaned properly, but for the most part, this is a job that can be outsourced and checked off within a few hours.

Are you about to start your spring cleaning? What’s on your list?
